"The earth has music for those who listen." - William Shakespeare
Elementary Specials (Kindergarten-4th grade)
"Let us take our children seriously! Everything else follows from this... only the best is good enough for a child."
-Zoltán Kodály, 1941
Elementary school students will be growing as consumers of music and begin their journey to become musically literate. Students will be learning a curriculum inspired by the Hungarian music education philosopher, Zoltán Kodály. His philosophy was that every man, woman, and child would be a well-cultured citizen through the process of musical literacy. Being musically literate in the way that one should be able to look at a piece of music and be able to read it, in their head, and imagine how it would sound, just as if they were reading text from a book. This is the primary goal of elementary music students, while instilling a love for music that will last a lifetime.
We will be exploring and learning these skills through singing a variety of folk song literature and applying the knowledge to musical instruments. Every student has a voice waiting to be discovered, and to be used as a means of self expression.

Middle School Choice Specials (5th-8th grade)
Band
The band is an opportunity for all middle school students to learn a woodwind or brass instrument of their choice. Students will learn how to assemble, play, and read music on their instrument. This is a great class if students would like to learn a secondary instrument as well! The band is continuing to grow, year after year. It has quickly become one of the most popular music classes.

Meet Ms. Harkins
I am originally from York, Pennsylvania, but have lived in Colorado for the past 20 years. I absolutely love Colorado and all it has to offer. I went to school at Colorado State University where I received my Bachelor's degree in Music Education and a Master's of Music with Kodály Emphasis. I have played clarinet for 20 years as my primary instrument, but have also performed on saxophone, horn, piano, guitar, and voice. I have served as treasurer on the board for the Regional Organization of Kodaly Educators, a professional organization for music educators, and a Regional Team Specialist of Elementary Music for the district. In addition, I have served as an adjunct professor of Music Education for Western University in Gunnison, Colorado. I am so excited to be part of the team at DGS and can't wait for another awesome year!
